Also, never forget to mark/tape your second hot both in the panel, box, and in the patch cord if you use wiring with only white, black, and ground. You never know if somebody after you might decide to put a piece of equipment that might actually draw a full 50 amps on the circuit so you must match the wire gauge to the receptacle. If you really wanted to keep the 50 amp plug on your MIG's cord, you would be obligated to use 6 AWG wire from the panel to the receptacle that can handle 50 amps. That way you have a proper 30 amp rated circuit breaker, wire, and receptacle. The specs on your MIG suggest that it draws 30 amps maximum so I would replace the 50 amp plug with a 6-30 plug and run 10 gauge wire from your panel to a 6-30 receptacle. OSHA would frown very heavily and expensively on anybody supplying a receptacle that suggests it can supply a certain amperage with a wire that is not rated to support that amperage- so don't even think of a 10 AWG wire to a 50 amp capable receptacle. My recommendation would be use the plug on the welder to guide your size of wire to the receptacle. Instead of making a extension cord, I would replace the entire factory cord with a longer cord of the length that you need, and use a more cost-friendly plug. Especially if you are going to need an extension cord. Some of the 50 amp receptacles are so expensive that it is actually cheaper to replace both the plug and receptacle with a smaller one. Even though you can place a 50 amp receptacle on the circuit, you should first consider the cost of that receptacle.
